JUDAS TREE (Cercis Siliquastrum)

Judas Tree (Cercis Siliquastrum) is fantastic in early spring when it is covered with rose-pink pea-shaped flowers that open in before the leaves appear. They appear in clusters all over the plant, even on main branches and sometimes the stem. When heavily pruned or pollarding the plant will continue to flower.  In the autumn the 10cm leaves, which are thin and almost round, turn yellowish-brown. The Bark is a rich, dark brown colour. You need to see this plant close up, not planted too far way from view at the far end of a long vista. A seasonal attraction, it should be mixed with other plants that are at their best at other times, such as the Japanese maple. It will thrive in most soils, preferably hot dry rocky soils.  It is reasonably drought tolerant once established. A wonderful tree, siliquastrum is deserving of a sunny space in the garden and recommended as a plant for pollinators , a must for the smaller garden. The Judas tree (Cercis Siliquastrum), originated in S E Europe and West Asia. It is believed the tree was introduced to Britain in the sixteenth century.
