Red Horse Chestnut Tree
Aesculus Carnea Briotii
The Red Horse Chestnut (Aesculus Carnea Briotii) is a hybrid tree known for its striking blood-red flowers that bloom in late spring. A cross between the common Horse Chestnut and the Red Buckeye, it adds vibrant seasonal colour to large gardens or park areas. With a compact shape, it creates a bold display during flowering, while its foliage is more subdued throughout the rest of the year. Ideal as a seasonal highlight, this tree thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun or partial shade.
Full Description
The Red Horse Chestnut tree is a stunning hybrid, a cross between the common Horse Chestnut and the crimson-flowered Red Buckeye from the southern United States. First cultivated in France in the 19th century, the ‘Briotii’ variety (formerly ‘Madame Briot’) is known for its striking blood-red flowers that bloom in late spring, creating a dramatic display. This hardy, medium-sized tree has a compact shape, making it ideal for larger gardens or park areas.
While it’s a showstopper in spring, with its vivid blooms drawing attention, the Red Horse Chestnut has a more subdued appearance for the remainder of the year. Its green foliage and structure are less striking, so it works best as a seasonal attraction rather than a year-round focal point.
Perfect for adding vibrant colour and seasonal interest to your landscape, the Red Horse Chestnut can be planted as a feature tree or in a mixed setting where its spring beauty stands out. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun or partial shade, making it a versatile addition to any garden or park.
Aftercare
It is essential with any newly planted tree to water well during its first season, especially during the summer months. Grasses or weeds should be removed if possible so that the water gets only to the tree roots. Prune when not in leaf which should be late Autumn to early Spring.
